About Henny Chen
Henny Chen has more than 14 years of experience in teaching Chinese literature in Taiwan and 9 years in the U.S. She holds a Master’s degree in educational technology as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Chinese literature. She has been the Chinese language teacher at Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward, California since 2007 and started the Chinese program there, teaching four Chinese classes along with a digital graphics class for the past 9 years. She became a full-load Chinese teacher, teaching five different Chinese classes during the 2016-17 school year. She was selected to pilot her class to support personalized learning classroom design due to her experience, presentation papers and research publication in flipped classrooms, and blended, personalized learning.
In addition to teaching at school, Henny Chen presents nationally and internationally at conferences and workshops. She is a renowned trainer and consultant in instructional technology for teaching Chinese as a foreign language in the U.S and abroad. Since 2008, she has been serving as the technology coordinator for UC Berkeley’s STARTALK program, which is a project funded by the National Security Agency and administered by the National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland. Over the next few years, she has developed numerous consulting projects and has participated in a variety of world language education leadership projects, such as the IMPACT STARTALK program at Stanford University and a teacher-student summer combination program at the University of Virginia. She shared her four-step flipped learning model to the program and later published her model in the STARTALK conference. As a co-trainer, she provided the essential training for 12 teachers who were selected from the nation in conducting and teaching Chinese online. She also monitored a 12-day online program that supported 36 students in 33 cities from 14 states. In the fall of 2016, she started an infrastructure program at UC Berkeley’s STARTALK to develop and provide an online credential enrichment program to teachers who are planned to continue their study to become certified teachers.
